Tina Turner’s solo career finally started taking off in 1983 with a remake of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” In 1984 , she took the record industry by storm when her much-anticipated solo album, “Private Dancer,” was released to overwhelming critical and popular success; with the album going on to win four Grammy Awards and eventually selling more than 20 million copies worldwide. She had become known for her uniquely energetic performance, raspy vocals and her signature look—short leather skirts that exposed her famous legs, voluminously styled hair, and her ability to glide across the stage in her high heels. Since than Tina Turner has been one of the most celebrated female recording artist of all time.
-1985, Turner returned to the screen, starring opposite Mel Gibson in the film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and performing the theme song “We Don’t Need Another Hero”.
– 1986, she published her autobiography, I, Tina, which would later be adapted as the film “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” with the soundtrack of the movie going double platinum.
-1986 also saw the release of Tina Turner’s second solo album, Break Every Rule.
The following decade, she released Wildest Dreams (1996), Twenty Four Seven (1999) and made several recordings for film soundtracks, including “Goldeneye” and “He Lives in You.”
November 26th saw her celebrating her 76th birth and though she’s from live performances, she shows no signs of slowing down. In 2013, at the age of 73, it was announced that she was engaged to marry her longtime partner, German record executive Erwin Bach. In July 2013, they were married in Zurich, Switzerland, only months after Tina had gained her Swiss citizenship.
