Elton John is one of the most popular musicians of the 20th century. As one of the top acts of the 1970s, he became famous for his live shows. He dressed in fabulous, over-the-top costumes and glasses for his elaborate concerts. In an interview with W, John explained that “I wasn’t a sex symbol like Bowie, Marc Bolan or Freddie Mercury, so I dressed more on the humorous side, because if I was going to be stuck at the piano for two hours, I was going to make people look at me,” and that he did!
In 1990, he achieved his first solo UK number one hit single, with “Sacrifice” from the previous year’s album Sleeping with the Past; which would stay at the top spot for six weeks. The following year, his “Basque” won the Grammy for Best Instrumental, and a guest concert appearance at Wembley Arena he had made on George Michael’s cover of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” was released as a single and topped the charts in both the UK and the US and at the 1991 Brit Awards in London, Elton John won the award for Best British Male.
