Eliminating self-doubt

Self-doubt is something that everyone experience at some point in their life, often it’s through working with people who don’t share your ideals or work ethics, being in bad relationships (intimate or friendships) that tend to breathe self-doubt in our lives.

For me it was a Primary School teacher telling me my Christmas presentation at a school recital was horrible. For years after that I had a lot of self-doubt about public speaking; most recently self-doubt came while working with colleagues who refused to share pertinent information that would resulted in my being able to perform my duties satisfactory to that of the team’s expectations. This I might add is a lame excuse for NOT performing to the best of my abilities, but nonetheless is led me to question my own abilities, and I now say it did breathe some self-doubt on my part.

Luckily for me I was smart enough to recognise my own faults and more past it.

Here are a few things to remember when you find yourself wallowing in doubt.

1. Your failures and mistakes do not define you.
Your potential, actions and willingness is what defines you. If you try to measure yourself, or worse, to defined yourself with what you think were mistakes and failures, you will inevitably end up doubting your own worth and abilities.

2. Self-doubt always comes from fear, insecurity, and disconnection from within.
Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, it’s a healthy part of inner self re-assessment. Self-doubt ? It’s just an illusion, that comes from fear and from being disconnected from who you are! Reconnect with your self, and recognise that Self-doubt is only a projection of your fears. Don’t get trapped in those thoughts running through you mind.

3. Self-love eliminates for self-doubt.
Hands down, the best way to eliminate self-doubt is through love for self. Be gentle! Be kind! Be loving towards yourself! Don’t beat yourself up, step back and evaluate your situation. Loving yourself is the basis for opening oneself up to life and others without falling into the limiting scheme your mind is geminating.

    I have to say that the primary school teacher should not have been teaching. There are ways to offer criticism and at the same time be constructive.

    So true! My school Principal used to say ‘Love yourself’. I didn’t understand what he meant by that. I understood it much later.’Reconnecting with the self’, that’s how I also put it. Thanks for reminding this once again. 🙂
