“Most of us, swimming against the tides of trouble the world knows nothing about, need only a bit of praise or encouragement – and we will make the goal.”
~Robert Collier

Two frogs named Will and Fern fell into a deep pit together. At first, they thought it would be easy to jump out. But after lots of failed attempts, they cried for help and a crowd of animals gathered around the pit.

Everyone agreed it was hopeless so they urged Will and Fern to accept their fate. The harder the trapped frogs jumped, the more the crowd yelled at them to give up. Finally, Will stopped trying. Fern refused to quit and with one mighty try she leaped out of the pit.

The crowd was amazed. Someone asked her why she kept trying when everyone told her she had no chance.

Fern was baffled. “What are you saying?” she asked. “I’m a bit deaf. I was sure you were all cheering me on. I couldn’t have done it without your encouragement.”

This story has been around for quite some time, but I recently heard it again while listening to a lecture video in which the speaker used it to illustrate the power of not giving up. What I took from that session though, is this story not only tells about the power of not giving up, it also shows the power of encouragement. Yesterday’s blog spoke about gathering your resources by finding people who can support you in achieving your goals. I know this isn’t easy because there will always be people in your life who will say to you -“you can’t do it.” Or “that’s impossible!”

Finding people to encourage you today may seem like trying to catch a lightning bolt in a jar. It may seem like that, but  it’s not. All that’s necessary is for you to turn a deaf ear to the naysayers and never give up, forget the 50 people in the stands booing you and focus on the one person that’s cheering you on. That one person can make a huge difference, that one person shouting your name has recognised your talents and believes in them even if you don’t.

So beginning today, decide if you’re going to make that leap and grow your wings on the way down or sit in the pit.
