“The willow is my favorite tree. I grew up near one. It’s the most flexible tree in nature and nothing can break it – no wind, no elements, it can bend and withstand anything.” ~ Pink
You can’t control what happens to you, but you can change how you respond to those events, if you choose to respond to life’s event with the same attitude over and over again, you’re not exercising flexibility. Flexibility is the ability to adapt to certain situations and the people around you, your flexibility will be displayed stronger in some situation than it does in others.
Flexibility can be characterised by five attributes.
Confidence– Believing in yourself and trusting your own judgments and your resourcefulness.
Tolerance-Being intolerant to the opinions or practices of others and does not display flexibility in handling situations fairly, especially if you’re working in a diverse workplace.
Empathy-This comes from the heart, it means you share emotions of others, pain, joy, sadness. It is derived from the Greek word for feeling, pathos. Sympathy and Empathy are rooted in the same word, both of which the world needs more of.
Respect– Having respect not only for yourself but also for others, which can be displayed in your ability to consider and understand the choices, needs and commitment of others, not just your own.
With flexibility also comes wisdom, which helps you to understand that life isn’t always about what happens to you, but also what happens to those around you. Family, Friends, Colleagues are all a part of your life and they each count on your flexibility to make it on this journey with you.
