Be the celebrators, celebrate! Already there is too much—the flowers have bloomed, the birds are singing, the sun is there in the sky—celebrate it! You are breathing and you are alive and you have consciousness, celebrate it!”
My rule of thumb is, if you haven’t used it in the past six months, then you don’t need it,. However, when we moved last September, there were a lot of stuff we had to give away because there was not enough space in our new place to fit everything we had accumulated over the past few years. It was difficult sorting and resorting and deciding what to keep and what to give away. However, enormous the lot seemed, trust me, it was nothing compared to the stuff I had to wade through before leaving The Bahamas six years ago This time around there we very few things that I hadn’t used in six months but there were lots of stuff I had bought for those special occasions, that only came out on those “special occasions!”
To help you understand better, I come from a culture where we are always saving something for a special occasion. The ‘good china’ for meals at Christmas, Easter, Birthdays. Our ‘good clothes’ for those special occasions, again, Christmas, Easter, Weddings, Baptism, etc…….. If any of my Caribbean family reading this, you know what I’m talking about. We store things like squirrels store nuts, storing and saving for those special occasions. As hard as it was, I had to break away from culture because I realised we were never taught to appreciate the true value of life. Life itself is something to celebrate!
If my grandmother were alive today, I’d say to her, it’s ok to use the Good China everyday! It’s ok to wear your Sunday dress on Saturday! It’s ok to cook the Turkey even if it’s not Christmas, eat come now and give away the rest. We tend to spend our lives just buying stuff for that special occasion when each day we are on this Earth is a special occasion. Each day we are given another lease on life is cause to celebrate. So I made a firm commitment to stop saving for later because my later, is today and waking up each day is a special occasion!
