Each one of us can make a difference. Together we make change.   ~Barbara Mikulski

I neglected to mention that this post was inspired by Deborah over at dancingpalmtrees.com who is not only making a huge difference in the life of her brother Stephen but also in the life of a young lady she mentors.

A man was walking along a deserted beach at sunset. As he walked he could see a young boy in the distance, as he drew nearer he noticed that the boy kept bending down, picking something up and throwing it into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things into the ocean.

As the man approached even closer, he was able to see that the boy was picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach and, one at a time he was throwing them back into the water. The man asked the boy what he was doing, the boy replied,” I am throwing these washed up starfish back into the ocean, or else they will die through lack of oxygen. “But”, said the man, “You can’t possibly save them all, there are thousands on this beach, and this must be happening on hundreds of beaches along the coast. You can’t possibly make a difference.”

The boy smiled, bent down and picked up another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied”Made a difference to that one”

The world has so many problems that are bigger than ourselves and it easy to have an overwhelming feeling that our tiny stone dropped in the ocean of chaos will make no difference at all. Everything we do in life has a ripple effect on the lives of the people we cross paths with as well as the lives of those they may cross paths with.

You don’t have to go searching the beach for starfish to make a difference. Here are five ways you can make a difference in someone’s life.

1. You can begin with a smile- Smiles are infectious.

2. Mentorship- We all have a story to share, your story could make a huge impact on the lives of others.

3. Forgiveness-It’s the first ripple in amidst the chaos

4. Pay It Forward- Someone once did something nice for you, now it’s your turn to return the favour to someone else in need.

Final note. North, South, East, West, we are all walking the same journey only different paths; believe in your ability to make a difference amidst the chaos of life.
